Writing Lyrics
Is a pain in my life. But I think I am improving with each song I write. When I wrote songs as a 14 year old it was all about forced angst! I wrote a song about a break up without even ever being in a relationship. It was a rough imaginary break up it would seem. My goal in life is to write a happy song. With Keith Appreciation Society I think it is possible. Hey, Hi and Hello is a happy song, kinda. The lyrics aren’t sad or anything, it just doesn’t sound happy. Out of the songs I have written I am only really proud of two lyrics-wise. One being Hey, Hi and Hello and the other being a song called Operation Overlord. First I must school you to make it clear why I am proud. Operation Overlord was the code name for D-Day in WW2. So, for when we did photos for Keith App. I had bought a replica newspaper from D-Day. So some of the lyrics are headlines from that newspaper. The way the lyrics work is, the first part is very much the soldiers moving onto France how they are feeling with the last part before the distortion being someone high up in the army giving a motivational speech saying “We will make history” etc. With the last line of the verse being “to the beaches” then distortion, big guitars and drums being them in battle. I liked this idea and like to force it on anyone who will listen to it.
I’m learning cool ways to write lyrics everyday. My favorite is one my dear friend and band mate Stephen Blythe taught me. Just write down lines that come to you and then you can go back to them later kinda just build lyrics. its a smart way to work.
Well enough ranting and back to trying to write lyrics.
